Great site. Loved the pictures. We found a kitten of 4 weeks of age in a back alley. He is about 6mo now and we had been told by several people that he is a chartreux. After looking at these pictures I am more than convenced he is. We love him dearly and e is such a friendly cat. He visits with my neighbors every day and comes when we call his name. His collar broke one day when he was out on his daily journey. He brought it back to me in his mouth and dropped it at my feet. I wonder how he got separated rom his mother and if he is pure chartreux. Is there any way of knowing?

Nice website ! I needed some information about the breed and see some pictures for comparison. My sister found a cat in the street a couple of weeks ago. She placed an ad in a newspaper, but nobody came to claim him, so he had to travel from Maryland to Georgia by plane to meet me. He is a lovely 8 months old Chartreaux. I wasn't sure about the breed, so I bumped into your website, and I found it very helpful. Now I know that my baby is a pure Chartreaux, and he has all the characteristics of this breed. We have 3 grey cats and 1 mackerel tabby. Even tho the 3 are grey, they all look very different. After much breed research I have decided that we have one that is predominantly Chartreux/one that is predominantly Russian Blue/and one that is some other t pe of Silver/Grey breed. In this website the way the looks and personality are described it matches exactly how my cat Ra acts. He is defintely a potato on sticks. And to think I got him at the local animal shelter as a small sickly kitten. He is cert inly healthy now!!! My cat Storm perfectly fits the profile of Russian Blue. I do have one question, does anyone know how much a Chartreux kitten costs?

my cat was adopted at a shelter as a 8 week old kitten. i knew he looked different from my other gray cat but i had to see a chartreux to know what that difference was. he is very heavy(15 lbs) his coat is what i call silver and he had racoon rings on his back and tail but grew out of them later. now a thick very soft coat that shines silver/blue. only thing is his eyes are not yellow but cat green. maybe he came from a chartreux that had a litter of kittens by a neighbor cat or something he looks just like yours very pear shaped but he was very cheap nice to see your great pix

I found this site while working O.T. for Jay Clark's boss. I've gone through the whole site. It's very lovely and informative. Cats are fairly new to me (3 yrs.). I'm, basically, a dog person (Whippets & Afghan Hounds). I adopted my 1st cat, Ellie, n t knowing much about cats. Ellie does not like to be held, & that was hard for me. I'm use to my dogs being wild about me. After a year (& much reading up), I decided to get an Abysinian (I saw one at a cat show yrs. ago & thought it was gorgeous). Af er waiting forever (the breeder wouldn't let her babies go until they were 16 wks), I drove to NH to get our boy. While there I discovered that he had a best friend (anOcicat), & I couldn't bear to separate them. I thought the 2-hr. drive home and the b g move to a new home would be easier on them if they had each other. I don't know why I'm telling you all this, except that I think your site made me think about what lovely creatures they are. My Abby sleeps w/my Whippet during the day, and my Ocicat s eeps under my covers with the Whippet at night. I don't know if you paraphrased the cat standards, but you made everything very clear. I enjoyed seeing Jaye's 'Austin' in the pictures. Oh, I grew to accept and appreciate Ellie's personality (after gett ng the kittens who will not leave me alone!). After 3 yrs., Ellie now sits next to me. She licks my arm too (I'm assuming that's a sign of affection). She also runs to me whenever I pick up a hairbrush. I had read that the Chartreux breed was known for being affectionate, and I also think that they are beautiful cats. The pictures on your website certainly bear that out. I first learned about the breed from an article in a 1984 issue of Cats Magazine and was enchanted. In 1995 I was finally able to acquire my two 'girls' from a breeder in Idaho. I live in Washington state so they had a long plane ride but all was forgiven in a couple of days. They have turned out to be just as enchanting as the article said.

My husband and I picked up Nellie from the Humane Society nearly two years ago. We fell in love with her beauty and sweet personality immediately. Her occasional sqwak was very entertaining, especially around meal time. Just two nights ago, she escaped from our apartment and we haven't seen any sign of her. The fields around our complex are filled with owls, osprey and fox. Our hearts are broken! Had to write to you after I saw your site, found through About.com. I had a Chartreaux, Niko, four years ago. I found him in an animal shelter and bought him for $10.00. I researched extensively and found out I had a purebred Chartreaux. He fit the st ndard and the personality to a T. That ten dollars was the best investment I ever made--even better than buying Kelly, my Ragdoll, for $500.00. Niko was the sweetest, most loving cat I've ever had. One day three years ago, he fell from my son's bunk b d and then a month later developed seizures and vomiting, voiding his bladder during seizures, running into walls, etc. The vet could not find anything, but said there probably was nothing we could do. So, we said goodby on Feb. 22, 1997. My husband, w o does not like cats, (but allowed me two because he loves me) cried for weeks. Even today, we talk about Niko and how much we miss him. He was a true companion to my husband, my two teenaged sons and me. With a dog and two cats now in my home, I cannot afford another animal, but I've told my husband when one of the animals passes on, I want a Chartreaux again. They are the best cats in the world.

I wasn't able to find my own Chratreux for many years later. You could say I'm head-over-heels with the breed. Robin Phillips suggested I contact you as I'm leaving for France in 2 weeks and intend to visit the monestary of le Grande Chartreuse. Can you recommend any other places to visit with a connection to Chartreux cats. I found your website like candy - very well done. I've had all of my Chartreux for less than a year. I got Olivia right after my beloved 16 year old cat Fluffy died. Fluffy was not a chartreux but she looked a lot like a chartreux with the wooley coat of the same color. She had green eyes however. Al my chartreux came from Les Beau Yeux Cattery. I do have a question, my cats are very skittish. If I go near them when they are on the floor they run. If I lie quietly on the bed they do come up to be pet. Niki likes to give me "sponge baths" at 5 in the morning (not appreciated at that time). Als , Orielle has a real meow. Olivia's is very quiet, as described by breed standards, and I don't think I have ever heard Niki meow. Orielle's sounds like a regular cat. Is that a breed fault? Also, what can I do to stop the cats from running from me. 've never hurt them (unless you include taking then to the vet to be spade). Sally

Wonderful site. I was especially interested in your comments on the ferals, as that is where my wonderful Major Grey originated. A robust 18 pounds at about 2 years of age, he started life as a feral living in horse stables. Sad to say, he is missing half his tail (I have no idea what happened). It was both my vet as well as a woman familiar with the Chartreux breed that informed me about Major's characteristics - I only knew that he was the most beautiful cat I had ever seen - thick & wooly blue coat, tha "inverted triangle" head - and a body that looks like a truck on tiny feet. He always has been such a love, even if he hid for the first week he was here - one can only speculate what his life was like as a feral. I have been told that he may have been a andoned as his eye color does not come up to show standards - they are gold with a hint of green, not the coppery color that is desired. Other than that, he is a Chartreux duplicate. Thanks again for your site!

Very interesting web site. Fluffy is now deceased. I always knew she was not a Chartreux but when she died, because she was so beautiful and sweet (her coat was identical to a Chartreux) I knew I had to have a cat that would remind me of her. That's wh n I got Olivia. I'm not sure how I wound up with two more (it seemed like a good idea at the time), but they are all wonderful and I love them, even if 5 cats does seem like a lot in a house that is not a cattery. I have become interested in the Chartreux breed after adopting a kitten from the local humane association. Everyone who sees our 4-month old 'Gris' says he looks like a "real breed cat". I started learning a bit about different breeds and have discovere that he resembles a Chartreux to a 'T'. (interesting that we chose to give him a French name from day 1)I can hardly believe that there could be a Chartreux at the Albuquerque Humane Association, but he sure looks and acts like one (from what I've read). i am delighted to find your website, it is so wonderful. i am originally from Houston, and now live in San Francisco. i adopted Amadeus from a vet who had rescued him and his bother & sister from the wharf. the vet believed they were abandoned because they had qualities not fit for show. a sad story, and even sadder when so many people would willingly adopt such fantastic cats. so i learned more about him finally, and it is eerie to see his gestures and stances and expressions on other cats when i look at the web pages of chartreux breeders. he is 9 years old now, and he is very cozy with my other 2 cats. i have three big fish tanks that he watches but is so good and never goes fishing! he is not much of a talker (mostly bleats!) and has the more green eyes, but he is huge: 17 pounds! he has the lower ear set, very widely set eyes which are tipped up at the corners. his feet are big and he has the double coat, but it is not long like in your pictures. i am so glad you included those, they are very pretty cats, i have never seen one before. i am thinking about finding a kitten, but the project seems daunting. i do not show, just love love love and live for my cats. are you looking for homes for special kittens that will not be show cats? again, thank you for putting such a lovely site out the

Thank you for a wonderful web site. I enjoyed following the Cattery history to the present. I tried to get Jenny to look at the photos but she was more interested in the cursor moving around. She looks remakably like her father Aneise Jaque. She is however quite dainty at only 11 pounds in comparison to her relatives.

HI, Nice site. I was especially happy to see reference to introduction of feral blood lines 50+ years ago. My grey kitty was a feral cat who lived outside my lab. Her parents (they were feral too) were not grey like her. However she looks and has every ch racteristic of chartreux -- both physical and personality. I like to think that these traits pop up now and then in the wild. Nice site. Felipe
